Hôtel de Glace
Quebec, Canada
Hôtel de Glace is built from scratch every winter near Quebec City and melts away each spring. Construction uses compacted snow for the vaults and clear ice for furniture, windows and detail work; the plan changes from one year to the next, so returning guests find a different building.
Interior temperatures sit a few degrees below freezing regardless of the weather outside. Guests sleep in insulated sleeping bags on ice beds layered with mattresses and hides, and the hotel briefs everyone carefully beforehand — what to wear, where to leave luggage, how the night actually works.
There is an ice bar, a chapel used for winter weddings, and sculpted themed suites carved fresh each season. Heated facilities sit alongside the frozen ones, so the cold is a choice rather than a condition of the visit.
